JoAnn passed away on April 22, 2010 after a courageous two year battle

with cancer, and fifteen days after our 20th wedding anniversary. I miss her dearly.

Personal Military Service


Began service with the United States Navy in June of 1967 at the age of nineteen. Attended basic training at the Great Lakes Recruit Training Command, Company 274. On July 8, 1967, was one of 10,000 recruits who formed a "living flag" at Soldier Field commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first "living flag" formed in 1917. Upon completion of basic training, attended Basic Propulsion and Engineering School and Machinist Mate "A" School at Great Lakes Naval Station. First assigned to the USS Guadalcanal LPH7 in Norfolk, Virginia. Transferred to the USS Lyman K. Swenson DD729 in June of 1968, assigned to aft engineroom. Deployed to WESTPAC Nov. 1968 through Jun. 1969 and again Mar 1970-Sept. 1970. Designated as "water king" and served as damage control phone talker on bridge during General Quarters. Received citation from Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Group SEVENTH Fleet for performance of duty during combat operations. Prepared Swenson for decommissioning and was released from active duty at the MM2 rate shortly thereafter. Member, USS Lyman K. Swenson DD729 Sailors Association.
